P2P following HTTP and ftp… About time.

February 20th, 2008 · No Comments

Following up from a post a while back called:

Evolution of file copy. “cp”, “ftp”, “http”, “p2p”

A new project in the EU has been setup between a number of educational and corporate entities to give birth to the next big open standard Internet protocol.  I.e. an open standard P2P protocol.

This is great news for internet users as innovation is being retarded due to proprietary implementations that are trying to make this into a major money making exercise. Money from internet users.  I equate protocols like ftp/http and now P2P as essential services that make the internet work.  No one can own these protocols, they need to be free and open otherwise the internet will stop evolving.

A new open P2P protocol will make Internet TV more viable and a better experience.  BRING IT ON.

A few notes on this.  This P2P-Next project hopes to expand on the P2P protocol to implement streaming and other extensions.  Expanding on the open source Bit Torrent protocol seems likely.

The project is called P2P-Next. Find it at www.p2p-next.org.
